How to pick the right motherboard
The motherboard connects every PC component, so start with the socket of your processor: AM5 boards (X870E, X870, B850, B650) for AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 including Ryzen X3D, AM4 boards (B550) for Ryzen 5000 such as the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, LGA1700 boards (B760) for Intel Core 12th–14th gen, and LGA1851 boards (Z890) for Intel Core Ultra. Then check the form factor (ATX or Micro-ATX) against your PC case, the memory type (DDR5 or DDR4 RAM), the number of M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, and whether you want built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
For a mid-range gaming PC build, a B650 or B850 board is plenty; X870 and Z890 boards add more PCIe 5.0 lanes, USB4 and stronger power delivery for high-end CPUs and overclocking.
